Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The Bell!
Picture lights are like the jewelry of home decor. They can be an afterthought, but their presence changes the whole glow of a room.
For one thing, it’s rare in an interior to have lights shining onto a wall, so picture lights add some interesting play of light and shadow that’s really beautiful and atmospheric. I love indirect lighting, and picture lights are the epitome of that.
They’re also one of the easiest sconce-type lamps to plug into the wall, because you run the cord straight down behind the frame to the outlet, and it mostly gets hidden.
The cordless, battery-operated ones are great for frames of course, but also perfect for the top front of a bookshelf! Most come with a remote control and are dimmable.
About sizing: as a general guideline, the picture light should be at least half of the width of the frame you’re illuminating.
Below, I pulled together a roundup of both the plug-in and cordless, battery-operated picture lights I’d like to have and use in my home. Picture lights can be really expensive, so I’ve done my best to hunt down a range of options at a range of price points.
Next, I’ll do plug-in pendant lights. Let me know what other kinds of lights you’re shopping for!
