030824: Things that made life special this week
Ribbed workout gear, a sunny snack, a skin-clearing mask, dance music, and a workout that's basically a dance party
Hello and welcome to Things That Made Life Special This Week, a celebration of the pursuits that add a little something extra to the everyday.
My week got off to a bumpy start with a flight that was 14 hours delayed coming back from Florida, so I’ve been a full business day behind all week and haven’t done much besides my job, sleeping, and working out. That doesn’t leave much to recommend, but here are a handful of things I got up to.
Wearing: Year of Ours ribbed workout leggings and crop top
I haven’t posted about this in a while, so just wanted to re-up my enthusiasm for the Ribbed Veronica Legging and Ribbed Gym Bra from the athletic wear brand Year of Ours. They’re supportive, flattering, flexible, and opaque. And they provide enough coverage for my taste while still feeling cute. I have Navy and Heather Grey. If I was ordering another color today, I’d get the Baby Blue, or this super cute two-tone bra and leggings.
Eating: Cottage-cheese stuffed yellow peppers
This protein-packed snack is exactly what it sounds like. I slice a yellow pepper down its natural lines and remove the stem/core/seeds. Then fill it with Good Culture cottage cheese and sprinkle generously with Everything but the Bagel seasoning and extra flaky sea salt. This was my lunch today!
Using: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask
I had a facial before going on vacation, but somehow came back with some clogged pores. Many thanks to sunscreen, salt, chlorine, and my fill of desserts! This mask clears me right up. Use code REFRESH for 20% off at Dermstore through the weekend, and stock up on it at any pharmacy in France, where it’s cheaper.
Listening: “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” by P!nk
I heard this song in a Peloton bike workout and the melody/beat are irresistible! By the way, did you guys hear about the recent study that showed that just dancing was far and away more effective in treating depression than anything else, including medication? Just dancing!!! We all need to put this song on immediately and dance away the winter blues! ABBA’s greatest hits will also do the trick.
I’m building an awesome 2024 playlist that I’ll share with you soon. This song is on it!
Moving: 30-minute Katy Perry strength class with Callie Gullickson on Peloton
My husband will judge me reading this, but I love Katy Perry’s music. I’m also having an instructor love affair with Callie right now. Her energy is great, her classes are simple and effective, her playlists always hit. This one was definitely hard, but the time flew.
Short and sweet this week! Join me in the open recommendations thread on Substack Chat, where I’d love to hear what’s making your life special this week. Here’s how to download the app if you don’t already have it.
I hope you have a great weekend!

Thoughts on hospitality in 2024
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The Bell! “Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise.” Hebrews 13:2 This Bible verse is painted above a much-photographed doorway in the Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris. That doorway is actually the first place I ever read the verse, though I now know it’s so ubiquitous as to …

Heritage series: Herend Porcelain Manufactory
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The Bell! Last week, we learned about the differences between ceramics, porcelain, and other terms I once used interchangeably. Today, I want to go deeper on one porcelain manufacturer that I’m particularly fond of: Herend.
